I recently had the opportunity to attend the annual IEEE RoboSoft Conference held at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego. The conference is a hub for experts in the field of soft robotics, an emerging area focusing on designing, fabricating, and controlling robots that interact safely with humans, animals, and complex environments.
One of the standout sessions was a plenary talk given by Dr. Robin Murphy, a renowned expert in search and rescue robots. Her work with robots deployed in disaster scenarios, including building and bridge collapses, highlighted the practical applications of soft robotics in critical situations.
An interesting twist at this conference was the inclusion of lightning talks. Presenters were given just a minute to introduce their poster presentations, sparking curiosity and encouraging attendees to explore their work further. This format was a refreshing change and provided a platform for both seasoned academics and emerging researchers to share their insights.

The conference showcased a diverse range of topics, from soft grippers for delicate object handling to advanced materials like hydrogels and elastomers used in soft robotics. The presentations, whether verbal or in poster format, offered valuable insights into design methodologies, control strategies, sensing technologies, and real-world applications.
Networking was a significant aspect of the conference, with opportunities to connect with fellow attendees, including academics, graduate students, professors, and postdocs. The intimate setting, with a few hundred attendees, allowed for meaningful interactions without the overwhelming crowds typical of larger conferences.
The highlight of the conference was a banquet where awards were presented for the best papers, posters, and workshops, celebrating excellence in the field of soft robotics.
The IEEE RoboSoft Conference served as a comprehensive platform for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to discuss the latest advancements, challenges, and innovations in soft robotics. With its diverse range of presentations, hands-on workshops, and insightful keynote speeches, the conference underscored the growing importance and potential of soft robotics in shaping the future of robotics technology.
