The San Diego Science Writers Association (SANDSWA) will mark the upcoming June Pride Month with a special Q&A with author Rowan Ellis. Ellis is the author of “Here and Queer: A Queer Girl’s Guide to Life,” which was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books in 2022.

In her book, Ellis covers important social, emotional, and health-related topics for an LGBTQ+ teen audience. Our Q&A will give science communicators an opportunity to learn how to better use inclusive terminology and feature diverse voices in their own work. Ellis will also discuss the process of researching, writing and publishing a non-fiction book.
This virtual Q&A will be moderated by Madeline McCurry-Schmidt, SANDSWA board member and science writer at La Jolla Institute for Immunology. McCurry-Schmidt said Ellis’s book and her YouTube channel are great resources for understanding the breadth of queer identities.
“I’ve learned a lot from how Ellis covers queer health, history and social issues,” said McCurry-Schmidt. “I’m looking forward to talking with Ellis about the power of language—both in the writing world and in the queer community.”
This Q&A is open to SANDSWA members and all members of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW). Register here.
